Favorite Texas Places

Central Texas and the Hill Country have some of the most scenic views and much of the best history in Texas.  There is so much to see and do.  I specialize in taking my guests down the historic back roads  to the small towns and rural places that are the real Texas that most out of state tourists rarely get to see.   We go to rodeos, to old dancehalls and bars to hear Texas music, on Bar B Q quests, to fairs and festivals, on wildflower hunts, to the best Texas has to offer.  We leave when we want to, go where we want to, stop where we want for as long as we want and leave when we are ready to go.  No rush, no delays.

All of our trips start in San Antonio or Austin.

Central Texas is seldom visited by out of state visitors.  This is where the earliest settlement and much of Texas history took place.  A landscape made up of gently rolling hills covered with a mix of fields and woods crossed by three major rivers.  It is dotted with wonderfully colorful and historic towns and places.  More.

The Hill Country is the most popular destination for Texans going on a weekend trip.  A landscape of rugged limestone hills and canyons carved out by numerous springs and rivers.  Settled mostly by the Germans, it has wonderfully preserved towns.  The town of Fredericksburg has turned into a Texas Santa Fe with fine art galleries and designer boutiques.   The wineries are becoming legendary for their fine wine and tasting rooms.

We also go on longer trips to the Texas coast and to west Texas.

The Texas Coast and Coastal Bend.  The Gulf of Mexico and coastal wetlands make this a tour for nature lovers.  This a longer trip from San Antonio.  Lots of bird watching and nature viewing.  See alligators close up in a swamp,  small port towns with shrimp boat harbors and try great seafood restaurants. Better as an overnight trip.

Big Bend - Terlingua.  Stunningly beautiful desert scenery with mountains and real ghost towns.  The Texas you see in the background of most movies.  A five hour drive one way from San Antonio, so this is an overnight trip for sure.  Bus tours don't go there and a private guide is the only way to see this region.

Texas Indian Sites

These tours usually go to see the Indian rock art in the canyons along the Rio Grand.  Along the way we can stop at the Kickapoo Indian reservation, or even stay there.   Other Indian tours are possible.

Most trips are day trips.  We leave in the morning and return that night.  Longer overnight trips are a nice option.  You get to see so much more.  I avoid the main highways, which are boring, and go down old back roads.  I try to make "getting there" as interesting as the destination.  Here are a few possible favorite trips and destinations.
