At the roadside park stop and look at the markers and interpretive display then turn right, southwest, on the Old Bastrop road.
This first stop is a small pull off with several signs and historical markers. Reset your odometer so you can keep up with the distance between markers. It will make some of them easier to find. ( The finished page will have the distances to each marker along this stretch of road. This demo does not)
We are now going to go back to New Braunfels on the Camino Real.
Now go south on the Old Bastrop Road. Keep a sharp eye out for the many
historical markers. This is a nice scenic drive. Stay on Old Bastrop road
till you hit Interstate 35. The other older route follows Hunter Road south
of San Marcos to Gruene in New Braunfels. Or you could go up Highway 21
to Bastrop. Highway 21 is built on top of the old Camino Real.

Here is the first historical marker. It is on the left about 1 mile south
of the start.

Next we go around a curve to the left and go down to a low bridge over
the San Marcos river. The crossing of the San Marcos river near the old town of San Marcos de Neve. The history of the Spanish town of San Marcos de Neve by Scott Nelson. |
| From the river we go up the hill and around a sweeping turn to the left. Go slow because right at the top of the grade and just around the curve there are three historical markers and room to pull over. This is the site of the old Spanish town of San Marcos de Neve. Notice the ravine behind the signs. That is the old road cut going down to the river. | ![]() |

Be sure to look on both sides of the road. The sign above is behind a
fence opposite the other signs.
